As employee wellbeing continues to become a key focus for businesses, flexible offices must continue to adapt to ensure they're providing a space to help facilitate workplace wellness. Below are 8 practical tips for flexible office spaces to improve their wellbeing offering.

How can flexible offices support workplace wellbeing?

1. Put on more community events

Feeling supported and part of a community is a key pillar of wellbeing.  One of the significant benefits of working in a coworking space or serviced office is that you are surrounded by other businesses, which can foster a more collaborative environment. The types of events you host  can vary: community breakfasts, running clubs, networking drinks, panel discussions, monthly game nights or inviting venture capitalist guest speakers are some different ways of encouraging integration between members.

2. Measure your air quality more frequently

Ensuring workers are breathing fresh air is core to optimum wellbeing, so measuring the air quality in your flexible office atleast on a monthly basis is important. The more frequently you monitor it the better, with some flex providers opting to continually measure air quality to ensure it remains at a healthy level at all times.

3. Partner with a gym to offer discounted membership

It’s well established that exercise can be hugely beneficial for both mental and physical wellbeing. Providing an on-site gym gives workers makes it really easy for workers to exercise during the working week. Obviously creating an entire gym is costly, but an easier win is to partner with a nearby health club and offer discounted memberships to coworkers.

4. Offer free fruit

A healthy diet can greatly improve a person’s well-being, and a really easy-win to help is to offer free fruit for workers. If you want a hassle-free way of ensuring there’s always fruit on offer, you can get weekly deliveries of fruit boxes. Many of them source seasonal fruit from local farmers, so it’s also a way of supporting your local community.

5. Host exercise or meditation classes

As important as they are, it’s sometimes tricky to fit an exercise class or meditation session into our daily lives, but offering these within a workplace can make it significantly easier. You don’t have to have a dedicated gym or wellness space; moving furniture to the side of the room and hosting an early evening class is a feasible option. Offering classes such as yoga, which doesn’t require much equipment can be a more manageable way to do this.

6. Provide outdoor space

Sometimes during busy work days, getting out into the fresh air can be a challenge. Providing a rooftop terrace or outdoor courtyard where people can eat lunch away from the desk or have an internal meeting outside can be hugely beneficial in helping members to get that much needed vitamin D dose.

7. Fill your space with plants

In communal areas of your flexible workspace, incorporating plants not only looks nice, but has also been shown to relieve stress, boost creativity and even have health benefits. Not only can plants make an office feel more natural, but they also help to improve air quality if selected carefully.

8. Incorporate natural light

Being inside an office all day doesn’t have to mean being tucked away from natural light. When designing a space, taking into consideration the levels of natural light that the private offices, coworking and communal areas have within the space is key.
